Less than a week into the new year, WPIAL will crown the first champions of 2023 on Saturday.
The district will host the Competitive Spirit Championship at Hempfield, with Class 2A competition beginning at 10:00am and the 3A portion of the event beginning at 12:20pm.
Class 3A will win the 3A Large Varsity, 3A Small Varsity and 3A Co-ed Champions. In the 2A class, the title will be determined by 2A large and 2A small.
Here’s hoping to successfully defend the championship on Saturday.
3A Large National Team – hempfield spartans
2A Large National Team – Laurel Spartans
3A Minor National Team – pine richland rams
2A Small National Team – hopewell vikings
3A Co-ed – Butler Golden Tornado
Last year’s overall champions were Hempfield at 3A and Laurel at 2A, so 2022 was the year of the Spartans.
Hempfield will be chasing a third straight win, while Laurel will be chasing her third overall win in the last four years.
Several schools have won two WPIAL Competitive Spirit Crowns since the first title was awarded ten years ago in 2013. Only Elizabeth Forward has won his three championships. The Warriors won his third consecutive Class 2A title from 2017 to his 2019.
The event starting at 10am will be available exclusively on Trib HSSN.
