Darrin Mano and Victoria Petro were elected Speaker and Vice-President of the Salt Lake City Council on Tuesday.
Usage: Members of the Salt Lake City Council vote for new leaders each January. Mano and Peter were unanimously approved.
- Their leadership role includes advancing the Council’s priorities and running the Council.
Important reasons: Mano’s background as head of a building firm may offer a nuanced perspective on urban planning, as Salt Lake City is experiencing rapid population growth and an unprecedented apartment boom.
- With districts that include part of Fair Park and the Salt Lake City International Airport, Petro can also have a greater focus on the west side.
- “Living in the West for 10 years has given me a front-line perspective on how important it is to be actively and fairly represented in communities of opportunity,” Petro said in a statement. I made it.
note: Petro is also a non-voting board member of the Utah Inland Port Authority and a representative of Salt Lake City.
- Mano told Axios that one of Petro’s responsibilities is to build trust with state legislators.
- “She’s going to be someone I rely on a lot for these issues,” he said.
Background: A member of a district that includes Ballpark, 9th, 9th and Liberty Park, Mano became the first Asian-American to serve on the Salt Lake City City Council in 2020.
- He told Axios that his top priority is to improve housing affordability in the city and make it more “feasible” for residents to live here.
Big picture: Salt Lake City is grappling with gentrification, prompting low-income residents to move out of the city, according to a Thriving in Place study released last year.
