Like Russell, VanVleet has been the subject of frustration and trade speculation due to his downseason with the Raptors. And like Russell, VanVleet will likely be an unrestricted free agent after the season if he opts out of the final year of his contract with the Raptors.
In Minnesota, where the Timberwolves are down 7-6 and have not gotten consistent effort from Russell, there is speculation that Russell could find a place on the bench to help revitalize his offense and defense. Trade rumors have loomed over Russell for a long time. Last summer, The Ringer’s Kevin O’Connor reported that the Wolves were “shopping” for Russell. More recently, Darren Wolfson of his KSTP in the Twin Cities in mid-December said:
“Miami came up with the idea: ‘Okay Minnesota, you don’t want to extend D’Angelo Russell. Why don’t you send Russell over here? Kyle Lowry’s here,'” Wolff said. Song said.
“Let me make this incredibly clear. Nothing far away,” Wolfson continued. “This is not Wolves buying D’Angelo Russell. I’m not convinced Miami is buying Kyle Lowry.”
Either way, Russell’s move on social media is moving the needles just five weeks before the February 9 NBA trade deadline.
