Preview: Huskies in action at the Desert Hockey Classic



game of the week
• No. 16 Michigan Tech will play in the Desert Hockey Classic at Mallet Arena in Tempe, Arizona.
• The Huskies will face host Arizona on Friday at 9:00 PM ET/7:00 PM Mountains.
• The Huskies will face the Air Force or 6th Boston College on Day 2 at 5:30pm Eastern/3:30pm Mountain.
• ASU maintains a late slot even if it’s not the Desert Hockey Classic championship game.
• Michigan Tech won the 2016 Desert Hockey Classic at the Gila River Arena.

CCHA Defenseman of the Week
• Michigan Tech Jr. Brett Thorne named CCHA Defenseman. He won the crown for the second time this season.
• Thorne led all CCHA Blueliners and qualified for the All-Tournament Team at the Great Lakes Invitational with two points and one assist. Both of his points were in the Husky’s victory over the then-No. 11 Michigan State in the GLI third-place playoff scored a goal on a power play so he tied the score 2–2 with just 1:13 remaining. He then assisted his Arvid Caderoth overtime winner.
• Thorne is third in the Huskies and fourth in the CCHA defense with 12 points.

Michigan Tech
• The Huskies are 12-6-3 overall and contend for the top of the CCHA standings with a conference record of 7-4-3.
• Tech went 5-2 in non-conference games over Alaska (2), St. Lawrence (2) and Michigan State.
• Ryland Mosley leads the Huskies with 21 points and 9 goals. Kyle Kukkonen has seven goals and seven assists for 14 points.

• Michigan Tech was ranked 16th in this week’s DCU/USCHO and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls.
• Tech receives votes weekly in polls, with a ranking of No. 16 being its highest this season.

GLI summary
• Michigan Tech hosted the 56th Annual Great Lakes Invitational at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids.
• Tech defeated No. 11 Michigan State University 3-2 after overtime in the GLI third place playoff.
• Arvid Caderoth won on an overtime power play. Brett Thorn scored a power play goal with 1:13 remaining to tie the game. David Jankowski also scored.
• The Huskies lost to GLI champion No. 18 West Michigan in the semifinals. Kash Rasmussen scored the Huskies’ lone goal.

• Head coach Joe Shohan is in his sixth season on the bench, going 107-83-19.
• He won his 100th career game at Bowling Green on November 5, 2022, ranking third in wins by tech hockey coaches.
• Shawhan’s 22 wins in his first season is the most by a Michigan Tech first-year coach. Jimnergang won his 22nd in 1982–83.
• Shawhan was named the Huskies’ 22nd head coach on May 30, 2017, after serving as Tech’s assistant coach for the past three seasons.

Non-conference
• Tech will play nine non-conference games this season.
• The Huskies lost at Ferris State on October 7th.

looking ahead
• Tech will return for CCHA play against St. Thomas at the MacInnes Student Ice Arena on January 13-14. It will be the second meeting with Tommy after the Huskies swept the series in Minnesota on November 18-19.
• Black and Gold will move to Ferris State on January 20-21.

CCHA Defenseman in November
• Brett Thorne was named CCHA Defenseman of the Month for November.
• Thorne contributed Tech to a 5-1-2 month, led the league in assists (6) and plus/minus (+6) in six games, and was sixth in points per game (1.00). Block Shot (11).
• Thorne is an integral part of the Tech defense that ranks 5th nationally in scoring defense (2.0) and 8th in penalty shootout percentage (.867).

CCHA Goaltenders for October
• Blake Pietilä was named the CCHA’s Goalkeeper of the Month for October.
• Earned the Month of the Month honor for the fourth time in his career and was also named runner-up for the HCA National Goaltender of the Month.
• Pietila led the CCHA goalkeepers in save percentage (.944), goals conceded (1.51) and wins (4) in October.

2021-22 Summary
• Tech finished 21-13-3 with a 16-8-2 record and the second seed in the CCHA Mason Cup playoffs.
