Michael Pennix Jr. threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns as No. 12 Washington held off No. 21 Texas 27-20 in the Valero Alamo Bowl Thursday night.

Texas scored 10 late points and pulled within 7 on Burt Auburn’s 26-yard field goal with 1:40 remaining on a failed onside kick attempt. The Longhorns (8-5) stopped the Huskies (11-2) in possession, took over their own 16 in 32 seconds, and reached the Washington 40 on the final play of the game.

Pennix finished the season with 4,641 passing yards, breaking the 20-year-old Washington’s season mark of 4,458 yards set by Cody Pickett.

The Pennix led back-to-back scoring drives of 75 and 90 yards in the second half, extending the Huskies’ lead to 17. He completed passes to eight receivers in 32 of 55 innings, tying the score with Taj Davis and Jalen McMillan.

Texas cut the halftime 10-point deficit to 13–10 on a 34-yard pass play from Quinn Ewers to Jonathon Brooks on the first possession of the second half.

Texas had no stars to run back Vision Robinson, running just 51 yards. 1,580 yards and he led the Longhorns with 18 TDs, Robinson skipped the game in preparation for the NFL Draft.

Losing in the tiebreaker after a 7-2 league mark in the Pac-12 championship game, Washington ended a seven-game winning streak with two consecutive bowl victories.

Texas entered its first bowl game under second-year coach Steve Sarkisian.

In addition to Robinson, Texas senior running back Roshon Johnson and senior linebacker DeMarbion Overshawn opted out of NFL Draft prep. No Washington players opted out.

Redemption at the Alamo

The Huskies are 1-1 at the Alamo Bowl. In 2011, Washington, coached by current Texas coach Sarkisian, lost 67–56 to Baylor in the highest-scoring edition of the game.

A place you can call home even if it’s far away

Ninety miles from Austin, Texas ended its streak in San Antonio. In his third Alamo appearance in the past four years, the Longhorns beat Colorado 55-23 in 2020 and Utah 38-10 in 2019.
