The Tokyo Auto Salon, the equivalent of the annual SEMA show in Las Vegas, opens on January 13th and is flooded with quirky tuner cars that push the boundaries of taste. This time, Subaru has released the first images of the modified vehicle that will be on display at the event, the Levorg STI Sport # Prototype and the Crosstrek Boost Gear Concept.
The Levorg STI Sport # — yes, that’s the hashtag in the name — certainly looks good. While the Japanese base model is powered by a 174-horsepower 1.8-liter Flat-4, the Tokyo show car is based on the Levorg STI R EX model, which is powered by WRX’s 271-horsepower 2.4-liter Boxer-4.
Marketed in Australia as a WRX sports wagon, the Levorg unfortunately only offers a motor paired with a continuously variable transmission, but the handsome bodywork makes for a long roof, even if it has to sacrifice the 6. It’s enough to look for the WRX.speed manual. The prototype is said to have “enhanced stable handling and premium drive feel”, rides unique wheels and will likely be offered in limited numbers only in Japan.
Meanwhile, the Crosstrek Boost Gear Concept adds a slew of off-road goodies to the recently announced third-generation Impreza-based crossover. An LED light bar and roof-mounted tent sit atop the Crosstrek, and the doors and side sills are clad in thick black plastic. Sturdy off-road tires give the crossover a raised ride height, while steps hang under each door to facilitate entry and exit.
Minor trim changes to the grille, front bumper, wheel arches, and turquoise accents help distinguish the Boost Gear from the standard Crosstrek. It’s unclear what Subaru has planned for Boost Gear, but the concept could preview future accessories for Crosstrek owners who want to explore a bit off the beaten path.
