Campbell and Merriwether Earn Sporting News All-America Honors – University of Iowa Athletics


Iowa City, Iowa — University of Iowa senior linebacker Jack Campbell has been named to the Sporting News All-America First Team.

Campbell is the 29th player to earn consensus All-American status as a Hawkeye, two of whom (OL Calvin Jones and LB Rally Station) earned the honor in two separate seasons. Iowa Football became the first team in program history to win Consensus All-American four seasons in a row.

Campbell was previously named to the All-America First Team by Walter Camp, FWAA, and AP. The American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) teams will be announced Wednesday.

In addition to Consensus All-American status, Campbell earned individual honors with two national awards last week. As a backer, he was awarded the Bacchus Prize.

Campbell was previously named Nagurski-Wooden Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Butokus-Fitzgerald Big Ten Linebacker of the Year, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors for the second straight season. He was named a semi-finalist for the Bednarik Prize and the Rotary He Lombardi Prize.

Campbell (6-foot-5, 246 pounds) has led Iowa’s defense all season long. He has 118 total tackles, second in the Big Ten and tied for 13th nationally. The Cedar Falls, Iowa native also recorded two interceptions. He has 295 career tackles, ranking 19th in program history.

Iowa has had a consensus First Team All-America selection (K Keith Duncan, 2019; DL Daviyon Nixon, 2020; OL Tyler Linderbaum, 2021) and two selections (LB Josey Jewell, DB Joshua Jackson) over the past four years . ) 2017.

Merriweather earned second-team All-America honors after starting every game and ranking second on the team with three interceptions. The Michigan native recorded his 47 tackles and scored his touchdown defensively on his return fumble in Iowa’s victory over the Rutgers. He was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for his play with the Scarlet Knights.

Meriweather was named a second-team All-America by the Associated Press on Monday.

Iowa State (7-5, 5-4) will face Kentucky at the Transperfect Music City Bowl in Nashville on Saturday, Dec. 31 at 11 a.m. ESPN. The Hawkeyes have won his 20th bowl invitation in the last 24 seasons under his coach, Kirk Ferenc, the head of the Moon Family football team.
