The San Francisco Giants have agreed to sign left-handed starter Sean Manair to a two-year, $25 million contract with an opt-out clause after the 2023 season. Reported by John Heyman new york post.
Manaea, 30, appeared in 30 games for the Padres last season, going 8-9 in 158 innings in 158 innings with a 4.96 ERA (75+ ERA) and a 1.30 WHIP. He did some decent, albeit inconsistent, early work, but fell apart in the second half, pitching to a 6.56 ERA over the final two months of the season.
Will a return to the Bay Area help Manaira? He spent the first six years of his MLB career with the A’s. During his tenure, he had his 50-41 record, a 3.86 ERA (107+ ERA), and a 3.3 WAR average in 162 games. This puts him squarely in mid-rotation starter territory, and we’ve also seen the Giants make the most of some starters in recent memory.
Assuming the Giants can’t bring lefty Carlos Rodon back to free agency, a rotation could be set for the 2023 season.
Again, they’ve already made a sizable bid for Aaron Judge, so they know they have plenty of money to spend on free agency this offseason. It means that you can spend some of the money allotted.
For now, Manair is back in the Bay Area, this time on the San Francisco side.
