“The COVID-19 pandemic has upended many aspects of how we work. Based on the results of expert-led panel events held in 10 regions around the world, based on a representative mix of technical experts and a comprehensive survey of IEEE members on the future aspects of the workforce, The FoW report revealed many recurring trends. And the key factors that have influenced, and will continue to influence, the future of the skilled workforce. Findings include the rise of emerging economies (economic perspective). Global warming (ecological perspective); more remote offices and remote economies (technical perspective); higher expectations of trust and ethical behavior (social perspective).
Additionally, the report uncovered several key technological advances that will transform and enable tomorrow’s workforce. Key innovations/developments identified include Bring Your Own Device (BYOD). Artificial intelligence (AI) as knowledge. Quantum Computing; Smart Buildings and Smart Cities to name a few.
The FoW report not only presents findings, but also actionable practices that the larger ecosystem, including industry experts, governments, academia, and professional organizations, should adopt to support the new workforce. I am proposing. For industries, the report encourages them to find ways to foster innovation and creativity in remote environments. Recommendations to governments are to increase resources to support behavioral skills training. The report points to the importance for academia of developing teachers with strong cross-cultural awareness, emotional intelligence, ethical and critical thinking. And for professional organizations, the report suggests stepping up efforts on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) to improve labor market equity as a means of supporting the workforce of the future. The Future Workforce (FoW) Report is the result of the IEEE FoW Survey and findings from 10 FoW panel events held in the United States.
