Texas Tech has allowed 30 sacks this season, which is tied for the most among power-five conference football teams. In search of better results, Tech his coach Joey McGuire said he would at least consider revising his line offensively.
At Monday’s press conference, McGuire noted that the depth charts listed this week show an “or” for both offensive tackle positions. Cale Rogers or Ethan Card at left tackle, Matt he is Keeler or Monroe he is Mills or Ty he is Buchanan. with a right tackle.
McGuire said it will be “true competition” for both positions.
The Red Raiders have allowed six sacks in three games this season and four in the other two games. Baylor scored six in Saturday’s 45-17 Bears win at Jones AT&T Stadium. On Monday, Baylor defensive end Gabe Hall became the fourth opposing player to record at least three sacks against the Red Raiders this season and was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week.
“You can’t give up six sacks,” McGuire said. “It has to do with me. It has to do with coach (Zach) Kitley. It has to do with (line) coach (Steven) Humvee. It has to do with the offensive line and the QB. We all have to see. We have to do it ourselves.”
The Red Raiders could replace Rogers and Mills when Mills is healthy. The Oklahoma State move started the first six games at right tackle, but remains in doubt this week with a sore knee that has missed the last two games.
“Monroe will be taking snaps from a right-handed stance and a left-handed stance now,” McGuire said. Caleb was right tackle, so we moved him to left tackle.Perfectly healthy, that’s what it looks like.
Texas Tech, Georgia Tech, Kentucky Tech, and Washington State each allow 30 sacks this season, mostly power fives. Four teams in the Group of Five conferences allow 30+. As offensive coordinator Zach Kitley points out, even if the sack occurs because the quarterback missed the lead and didn’t throw on time, or if the sack occurs because of a pass protection, this is not the case. is a high number. Failure due to running back or tight end.
Rodgers made 24 consecutive starts. Kalde started seven games as a freshman in 2020 and two games last year, but has not had an opportunity to play this season.
Maguire said the Red Raiders may actually use more first units for first units to make the line more pronounced.
“At left tackle, we have Caleb Rodgers and Ethan Carde,” McGuire said. “(Kalde) is the older man. He’s done everything we asked him to do, so we’ll leave the fight to those two men.
Tech has also been keeping an eye on Buchanan on the left tackle in recent weeks, with line coach Steven Hamby praising Buchanan’s athleticism. But he’s a redshirt freshman, and it’s hard to throw a redshirt freshman who’s never played left tackle into the fire of the Big 12 at midseason.
Keeler joined the starting lineup when Mills fell.
“Ethan played guard and tackle and both in college football,” McGuire said. “Last week, whenever Monroe went down, he got all the reps as Caleb’s back-up. ”
Tech’s pass game is one of the extremes. In addition to being in the bottom five in sacks allowed, the Red Raiders are tied for fourth with FBS in pass offense averaging 338.0 yards per game and lead FBS in interceptions pitched with 15. . In the latter category, Donovan Smith pitched. 8 in 220 attempts, Baeren-Morton had 6 in 158 attempts and Tyler Schoff had 1 in 12 attempts.
McGuire hinted on Monday that Morton will make his fourth straight start. At the very least, he’ll start the week with the first team in preparation for Saturday’s game against the No. 7 TCU in Fort Worth at 11am.
Kitley said calling more Lampleys could have helped the attack against Balor. The Red Raiders finished with 200 yards in total rushing, minus 51 yards on sacks that left them with 149 yards in net.
“We should have run the ball more and taken the pressure off them,” he said.
The Red Raiders also had some running back screens in their game plan, but Kitley said he lost confidence in using them after right guard Landon Peterson went down with a shoulder injury early in the game. The Odessa-Permian native has been a starter in all eight matches and has been somewhere between questionable and questionable this week. Redshirt freshman Jacoby Jackson came in for him.
“If you do screens, you have to repeat them many times throughout the week,” says Kittley. “A lot of your screen games have guards and centers on screen, especially when it comes to the right side of the offensive line.
“When Landon went down, Jacoby didn’t have that many rep to get a screen like that. The biggest part of the screen is hitting the (block) target when it’s out in space. That’s something we didn’t get to. Again, we probably should have done it, but at that point in the game, we weren’t so comfortable when it happened.”
