CORALVILLE — Winning state volleyball tournaments isn’t usually easy.

To say that North Scott’s win in the Class 4A Quarterfinals at Xtream Arena on Monday afternoon was an easy one is probably not true. It’s just that the No. 2 Lancers looked very good in a three-set sweep (25-15, 25-21, 25-10) between No. 11 Bondurant and Farah.

“I thought it was one of the best games of the season,” said North Scott sophomore and hitter Abby Hayes. “We know it’s the end of the season and if we lose we’re done. Our goal from the beginning was to be state champion. It feels like everyone is clicking right now.”

Despite his young age, Hayes is one of the better hitters in the 4A field. He has a team-leading 11 kills.

But this was a complete team effort. One of the stats for this match was his 16 aces for North Scott. Hayes and Nora Ralphs each with 3, Sidney Scarrich and Ella Kusel with 2 each, Georgia Blancan with his 1 and Emma Shermerhorn with his 5.

“Since winning the regional final last week, we’ve been working on our practice. We were ready to come out here and play like we did today,” Schermerhorn said. “In his first two sets, he didn’t play super clean volleyball. They were close to us. In the last set, we really handled business.”

North Scott’s Taryn Vanyerwage Coach said: “So what we put in their heads is, ‘You have to go out there with confidence and believe that you’re going to be here.’ I feel like everyone did it.”

The North Scott (33-5) played in the 5A schedule in the Mississippi Athletic Conference. In early October he reached the semifinals of the 5A Pleasant Valley where he appeared in his five games.

The Lancers will face No. 8 Clear Creek Amana (33-10) in the 4A semifinals on Wednesday at noon. Bondurant-Farrar finished the season with his 24-11 record.
