deli
A Campus Corner resident dive bar and off-the-beaten-path institution with timeless energy and long history, The Deli has become a staple of generations of OU students.
The lighting inside the bar is dim, and the floor is made of rough bricks with cobblestones. A few steps up is an L-shaped wooden bar with glasses and translucent red plastic cups stacked high. Faded handwritten signs display drink specials, and beer shelves above the bar display bottle prices. Bartenders track patrons’ drinks using a tally system rather than a computer system like other bars in town.
In The Deli’s bathroom, the walls are covered in stickers and paintings, and the mirrors have faded chalk marker sketches. The bar has an uncountable number of regulars, and every night you can find groups chatting and passing around cigarettes right outside your door.
Despite being one of the smallest bars on Campus Corner, The Deli is also one of the liveliest. Every Tuesday is a karaoke night with my favorite host, Karaoke Kate. College students line up outside their doors, enthusiastically singing their favorite songs. The stage is just a foot higher than the rest of the bar floor, allowing intrepid karaoke patrons to be seen above the crowd while maintaining the intimacy of the experience.
In 2019, The Deli celebrated 40 years of live music. The bar has a constant stream of artists playing a variety of musical styles. Newcomers and veterans alike are performing their own tunes every night of the week. On Wednesdays, The Deli hosts ‘Open Mic Nights’, where artists from all walks of life can play casually. The Deli is Norman’s most consistent live music venue. Every day, artists perform for enthusiastic crowds.
The deli is open daily from 4pm to 2am.
