Knoxville, Tennessee (WATE) — The Knoxville Police Department is reorganizing. The change was announced by Chief Paul Noel during a promotional ceremony held Monday night at the Civic Coliseum Auditorium.
According to KPD, the most significant changes are: Chuo-kuThis will increase the number of police stations from two to three. The Central District encompasses downtown Knoxville, the University of Tennessee campus area, and all of South Knoxville.
“This is not changing for the sake of change. There is real purpose and intent behind this,” said Chief Noel. “With the addition of District 3, our officers have reduced their focus, directed their efforts more narrowly, become more proactive, and engage directly with the community on a daily basis to reach out to each area of the community. We can solve certain public safety issues that affect the city.”
Another change is that some previously centralized units are now Divided into individual districts, including the Transportation Service Unit. This will also include Inspections and Community Outreach Units, expanding my role as Community Partnerships Officer. Community Partnership Officers are assigned to specific districts and help solve problems, address quality of life and facilitate community meetings.
“We want to empower district commanders and give them the resources they need to solve problems within their districts, and this change will make that easier,” said Noel. “Whether it’s a business facing ongoing problems, traffic complaints, or specific concerns from neighbors, our district commanders are committed to resolving issues as they arise. We will secure the necessary personnel for this.”
In addition, some members of the department were promoted to leadership positions, and others were transferred to new and different assignments.
“It was important to me to move existing command personnel to other missions as much as possible,” Noel said. “I wanted everyone to have a fresh start and give senior his leadership team the opportunity to diversify their experience. We can also strengthen the sector and make a positive impact.”
