For the past 26 years, Springdale-based nonprofit Business and Industry Training (BIT) has provided flexible, self-paced skills training in Northwest Arkansas. Recently, the organization has expanded its capabilities and reach through scholarships and support from local businesses and foundations. BIT director Julie McCallaster said it was established when local factories were short of skilled workers, such as electricians and plumbers, as they retired. With the college push, factories needed workers faster than they needed to complete their degrees. This has led to local business leaders working together to form an organization.
